's go to jason carroll at the newtown united methodist church. that church has provided a spir out tether of sorts for a community awash in grief. what role does this church play today? >> reporter: well very important role this morning and this is where the church is going to be ringing the bell 2 times. everyone in the community is going to be listening as that happens. it's an ancient ritual that's taken place over decades. it used to be traditionally a call to worship but today as you know it's a call to remember. three pastors will take turns ringing the bell 28 times. i spoke to one of the pastors, past oor jane sibley. this is very personal for her. it's especially personal to pastor sibley, her family is directly connected to the school and she had an important message she wanted to get out to the survivors living here in newton. >> my grandsons give me the joy of being able to laugh for a moment and i'm refusing to allow that -- >> reporter: chase kowalski, one of the little boys who died in the shooting, went to this church here and his mother apparently, carol, has been
coverage of the newtown, connecticut shooting continues right now. >>> good morning, everyone. i'm john berman. >> i'm kate bolduan. we want to well koom viewers from the united states and those joining us from around the world this morning. you're watching our special coverage of the connecticut school shooting here in newtown. we're live in newtown, connecticut. >> here in newtown the president will be coming later today. he's expected to meet with some of the victims of the families and he will speak at a vigil tonight remembering the victims. president obama spoke about the hea heartbreak hours after the shooting on friday and again during his weekly address yesterday. now, of course, we have the names of all the victims in this shooting. there were 20 children, all of them were just 6 or 7 years old. there's been a fund set up to help the families of the victims. here's the address if you'd like to send a donation, the sandy hook school support fund, 39 main street in newtown, the zip code is 06470. >> meanwhile, investigators here in newtown are trying to piece it altogether. they

school shooting in newtown, connecticut, so many people across the country, around the world really, have been asking how can i help? the united way of western connecticut has set up a fund to provide support services for those affected by the tragedy. they have now raised $3 million. that is incredible. joining me now are two leaders of this fund-raising effort. will rogers, a selectman of newtown and kim morgan, ceo of united way of western connecticut. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> $3 million, an incredible milestone. and you will raise so much more in the coming weeks and months. i know there has been a debate about how to distribute these funds. kim what is the latest thinking on that? >> when we started the fund, it was a way to be a guardian. our intent is to turn the funds over to the community and let them decide. >> the families as well, right? >> they are a cross section of the community input, yes. but the fund was soliset solici as an undes ignated fund. we are trying to be as broad as possible. >> what are some of the suggestions floating
many gathered at the edmond town hall. the united methodist church in newtown rained church bells 26 times in honor of those who lost their lives last week. >> the president has called on congress to pass legislation that bans the sale of military assault style weapons and high capacity ammunition clips. he also asked the vice president biden to come up with a proposal by january to keep children safe. this includes addressing mental health and school safety. >> i wanted take a minute to respond and to let you know that we do here which you are same. like the majority of americans i do believe that the second to admit does allow you to bear arms. the fact is that most gun owners in america are responsible. they buy them legally and they use them safely. it is encouraging that a lot of gun owners have stepped up to prevent more tragedies like the one in newtown. the >> the president is calling on congress to ban the sale of assault style weapons and ammunition clips. he was abiding to try, with this by january. >> wall street, they joined arrest of the nation in a moment of silence. t
the bells tolled 26 times this morning in newtown, connecticut and countless other communities across the united states, noting each of the people killed at a connecticut elementary school exactly one week ago. in this morning's "wall street journal" peggy noonan tackled question how parents and children go from here. she writes, kids are often afraid of imaginary monsters like ones that supposedly live under their beds. she shares how a friend tolder, quote, what is so terrible for the little kids hear about newtown, that the dream monster is now real. joined by a group of parents, some of whom you will know as political analysts or from other fox news segments but all of whom have young children in a world where now we realize the monster is real. thank you all so much for being here. such a sad day for so many in the country. i know our viewers are feeling it because we were together a week ago exactly right now as we learned that it was in fact 18 or 20 children who had been killed. i feel it and i know you all feel it. and the question is now, a week later and on a go forward bas
our country cannot tolerate this anymore. joining us with more from newtown is peter doocy. >> good morning. at this time just three days ago, six educators and 20 first graders were getting ready for school like always. by last night, the president of the united states was here at a very painful memorial service reading their names one at a time. >> i am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depths of your sorrow, nor can they heal your wounded hearts. i can only hope it helps for you to know that you're not alone in your grief. our world, too, has been torn apart. >> before his national address, president obama met privately with families of the innocent children and adults who lost their lives on friday. principal dawn hochsprung's daughter tweet add photo with a caption that said, my mom would be so proud to see president obama holding her granddaughter but not as proud as i am of her. the heart broken family of emily parker posted photos. others showing smiles. after the private meeting, president obama took the stage to promise action. >> in the coming weeks, i'll use

elementary. the school now cleared of shooters. newtown police say there's at least one other person shot. police telling abc news that they're still treating this as an active shooter situation. state emergency management officials confirming that ambulances and other units are en route and staging near the school. again, these are pictures from the park ing lot of the school. police also believe they may have located the suspect's car, again, as we just are getting information here, and again, it's sandy hook elementary school, about 15 miles from danbury, another major city in connecticut. two hours north and east offing new york city. >> obviously, of incredible concern is the extent of the injuries that may have occurred there at sandy hook elementary school. we do know according to the newtown bee on the scene that there was one child carried from the school by police, seriously wounded. another injuries have been reported we know that these emergency personnel gathered their enmass, the extents of the injuries unclear. according to the website of newtown school, afternoon buses and
iota of the courage those teachers, that principal in newtown summoned on friday -- if cooperation and common sense prevail -- then i'm convinced we can make a sensible, intelligent way to make the united states of america a safer, stronger place for our children to learn and to grow. thank you. and now i'm going to let the vice president go and i'm going to take a few questions. and i will start with ben feller. >> thank you, mr. president. i'd like to ask you about the other serious issue consuming this town right now, the fiscal cliff. >> right. >> haven't you betrayed some of the voters who supported you in the election by changing your positions on who should get a tax increase and by including social security benefits now in this mix? and more broadly, there seems to be a deepening sense that negotiations aren't going very well right now. can you give us a candid update? are we likely to go over the cliff? >> well, first of all, there's no reason why we should. remember what i said during the campaign. i thought that it was important for us to reduce our deficit in a balanced
ownership in our area was important in the aftermath of the newtown shootings. >>> starbucks, our very own starbucks, is urging washington to come together. this ad running in today's "washington post" and tomorrow's "new york times" highlights starbucks' new initiative, calling on elected officials to unite on the solution to the fiscal cliff. employees in the washington area starbucks will write the message on customers' cups, urging leadership from congress. aol is also joining the effort by sharing the come together message across its network of hyperlocal websites called patch. you know, this is really a terrific thing. it's a lot of extra work for the employees in all the starbucks, but it's a terrific thing just to remind people -- not that they need reminding -- that we are represented by incompetence in washington. >> it's true. it's very howard schultz, the ceo, who has used his platform of one of the largest companies in the world to push a message or do what's good for the greater good. a couple years ago during the jobs crisis, if you remember, he did a program where you could
